The Next Phase of SAP Sustainability Footprint Management: Greater Insights for Competitive Advantage

Global pressures are intensifying, regulations are evolving, and value chains are growing more uncertain. In this complex environment, companies are seeking to manage regulatory, market, and environmental externalities with proactive strategies and strategic action. SAP’s answer is a suite of sustainability solutions that can enable reporting, optimize towards sustainable business transformation, and build resilience against evolving global challenges.

Since 2021, SAP Sustainability Footprint Management has been SAP’s key solution for efficient carbon management. We are excited to share major new updates, both delivered and planned, as the solution evolves into a new phase: one where customers rely on SAP Sustainability Footprint Management as their single source for environmental footprints beyond carbon.

SAP Sustainability Footprint Management is an ERP-centric, AI-enabled foundation to help calculate, analyze, and manage your company’s environmental impacts. Read on for details about changes that enable companies to move beyond carbon reporting and turn sustainability into competitive advantage.

Decarbonize your value chain with ERP-centric carbon management

A single source for scalable footprint calculations, optimization, and reporting

Companies today face growing pressures: meeting evolving regulations and standards, rising investor expectations, high carbon and emissions-related costs, and data insights that flow back into processes like procurement, finance, or strategic planning.

As companies seek to keep up, they need highly accurate footprint data that is grounded in actual business data. Delivered and upcoming updates to SAP Sustainability Footprint Management extend footprint calculations beyond CO2 emissions to include other impact categories, such as land use, energy, waste, and abiotic resource depletion. With insights into more environmental levers, your company can fulfill the most common reporting standards, manage risk, decrease costs, and control externalities.

SAP Sustainability Footprint Management can turn fragmented data into integrated, actionable insights. By leveraging actual business data from SAP Cloud ERP and enriching it with additional sources such as energy flows and supplier information, it helps automate the calculation of accurate, audit-ready footprints at both corporate and product levels. Embedded into core business processes like procurement and finance, these insights enable companies to move beyond compliance-driven reporting toward strategic sustainability that can drive competitive advantage.

Updates to SAP Sustainability Footprint Management extend the same data governance, auditability, and automation to more impact areas. From the corporate level down to individual products, this enables calculations of actual footprints—not just estimates—for numerous environmental factors. Automation and AI capabilities help reduce manual effort, while high data quality can ensure that reporting is detailed and decision-making is well-informed.

One foundation, many environmental levers and business outcomes

Staying competitive in a changing global environment and driving change make it critical to identify ways to reduce costs and invest in AI-based technology. Because SAP Sustainability Footprint Management is deeply integrated with SAP Business Suite, it can enable customers to gain transparency across their entire supply chain—thereby making sustainability actionable and surfacing sustainability insights where decisions are made across the enterprise.

SAP Sustainability Footprint Management is the single source of truth that can be embedded across your operations, turning reporting into business value.

The new phase of SAP Sustainability Footprint Management moves from compliance-driven reporting to steering and value creation. The updates are part of SAP’s vision to transform sustainability data into a catalyst for long-term business value. Our approach to sustainability treats environmental footprint calculations—now with an expanded scope in SAP Sustainability Footprint Management—as a strategic asset that enables businesses to make business decisions like:

  • Innovating products and services to decrease environmental impact and support a more circular economy

Innovate, Connect, and Deliver: Accelerating Value Across SAP Business Suite

What happens in Vegas doesn’t have to stay in Vegas, especially when it’s about the future of enterprise technology. At last week’s SAP Connect event in Las Vegas, SAP Executive Board Member and Chief Operating Officer Sebastian Steinhaeuser took to the keynote stage on the final day to share how SAP is creating a new era of productivity, intelligence, and business outcomes for customers worldwide.

Deep research AI and role-based assistants, coupled with SAP Business Suite innovations, take efficiency to new heights

Before diving into the heart of the keynote, Steinhaeuser invited SAP solution area CMOs to deliver lightning-fast recaps of news from the various SAP Connect event tracks. In just under two minutes each, they covered finance, procurement, supply chain, HR, and customer experience. From autonomous accounting and next-gen procurement to AI-driven talent acquisition and smarter customer loyalty, the message was clear: SAP is innovating across every business function.

The real challenge: connecting priorities

As Steinhaeuser pointed out, “The reality is each business area has its own unique priorities and, of course, all-important urgent matters.” The real challenge is not just launching new features; it’s aligning processes, data, and teams to conquer uncertainty and achieve true customer focus. “Simply putting an [AI] agent on top of a broken process will solve nothing,” he said.

The flywheel: AI, data, and apps in motion at SAP

So, how does it all work together? Enter the “flywheel” model: the dynamic cycle of AI, data, and applications that drives synergy across the enterprise. This is not just a theoretical approach. Steinhaeuser showed how “SAP runs SAP” using the flywheel model.

Graphic demonstrating "flywheel" model: AI, data, and apps

First, he said, SAP uses “role-based AI assistants, powered by specialized agents, [to] support team members across all areas of SAP.”

Next comes data. Earlier this year, SAP became “customer zero” for SAP Business Data Cloud (SAP BDC), connecting all enterprise data in a single layer to generate faster and better insights across financial, workforce, and sales planning. “We’re excited to go live with the first set of intelligent apps, starting with People Intelligence,” he added.

Finally, the app layer: SAP has moved from SAP ERP Central Component (SAP ECC) to SAP Business Suite and SAP Cloud ERP, through RISE with SAP. “The SAP Business Suite is where data is created and where AI delivers impact,” Steinhaeuser said.

But processes continuously evolve with AI, he said, noting that business transformation management, powered by solutions like SAP Signavio and SAP LeanIX, helps SAP and its customers continually improve processes and architecture, with AI embedded everywhere. The company also uses WalkMe to ensure employees stay informed and engaged at every step.

“Driving SAP’s own transformation, I understand the challenges you face,” Steinhaeuser said. “I am convinced leveraging the flywheel of AI, data, and apps across the entire SAP Business Suite is how we win together.”

Embedded AI: tangible value, secure, and seamless

Brenda Bown, chief marketing officer of Business AI at SAP, took the stage to highlight how business AI is showing up in day-to-day work. “I’ve heard three consistent themes in conversations [with customers]: first, you want AI that can provide tangible value; second, that is secure and properly governed; and third, that works seamlessly across your teams and business. We’re here to deliver just that,” she said.

Joule is now embedded in use cases in trusted SAP applications and is making work faster and easier across the enterprise. “By the end of this year, we will have more than 400 of these AI use cases,” Bown said. Joule Agents automate tasks across departments, and the new agent builder in Joule Studio (generally available in December) helps customers extend, build, or customize their own agents. SAP LeanIX AI Agent Hub and agent mining capabilities in SAP Signavio provide governance and transparency for AI agents.

Bown noted that customers like Matur Fompack are using Joule in SAP SuccessFactors to hire faster and improve career development. “The results are phenomenal: a 48 percent reduction in HR process execution time and 40 percent faster employee development and career planning, and, most importantly, a better employee and candidate experience,” she said.

Graphic: Matur Fompack uses SAP SuccessFactors, showcasing stats of 86 Joule use cases effectively implemented, 48% faster HR process execution and 40% faster employee development

For processes that require multi-step workflows and nuanced decisions, SAP introduced a new generation of role-based AI assistants. “They know your role in the organization, because they are role and context aware,” Bown said. These assistants tap into the right agents for the job, removing any guesswork and helping humans unlock new levels of insight and productivity.

She also showcased how agents collaborate across departments, automate workflows, and even extend SAP’s business logic to autonomous devices like robots. Early pilots with partners like NEURA Robotics are already showing Joule Agents planning and executing real work in the real world.

Data and intelligent applications: unified and actionable

Data is only valuable when it is actionable. Irfan Khan, president and chief product officer for SAP Data and Analytics, highlighted SAP BDC, which unifies enterprise data and powers intelligent applications. “SAP BDC offers the most powerful foundation for connecting your existing data, building next-generation applications, and the ability to foster and deploy reliable AI,” he said. And the new SAP Business Data Cloud Connect solution enables secure, bi-directional data sharing with partners like Databricks and Google Cloud.

Intelligent applications bridge the gap between people and AI. They support smarter decisions and collaboration. “These applications learn from your data and include business simulations to support every business leader with smarter decisions,” Khan explained. “If we don’t have a reliable data foundation built around trust, having reliable and resilient data, it becomes very debatable whether or not AI will succeed.”

From insight to action: transformation in practice

How do organizations turn strategy into action? Michael Ameling, president of SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP), demonstrated how SAP Business Suite helps drive innovation by uniting core applications, data, and AI, all powered by SAP BTP and Business Transformation Management solutions. “Let’s say you want to understand and improve a business process,” he said. “SAP Signavio lets you dive deep and understand every detail, and can suggest concrete actions. Then, use those insights to improve the process in SAP Build by automating processes and building your own agents.”

He demonstrated how SAP BTP and the Business Transformation Management portfolio can help organizations connect systems, gain visibility, and automate processes. Tools including SAP Signavio, SAP Build, and SAP Integration Suite are helping customers like Blue Diamond Growers streamline operations and accelerate transformation.

Graphic: SAP customer Blue Diamond identified 500 innovation opportunities, saved 2,000 hours annually, and delivered 30 process improvements.

Services and support: accelerating innovation and realizing value

SAP’s Anja Schneider, SVP and global head of Premium Engagement and Advisory, wrapped up this segment of the keynote by focusing on how the company’s services and support teams help customers realize the full value of their SAP investments.

“We’re with you every step, like a personal trainer,” she said, highlighting how SAP’s suite methodology, integrated tools like WalkMe and SAP Cloud ALM, and expert guidance help customers realize the full value of their SAP investments. She pointed to IBM’s transformation project as proof: working with SAP MaxAttention teams and a clean core approach, upgrades went smoothly with low incidents for more than 150,000 users across 175 geographies.

Customer perspective: Southern California Edison’s journey

Real-world impact matters. Southern California Edison (SCE) SVP and CIO Todd Inlander shared how the utility company’s transformation journey with SAP is helping modernize its foundational systems and optimize back-office processes. Facing unprecedented demand and environmental challenges, the company is leveraging SAP solutions, including SAP Business AI capabilities, to transform its operations.

“We need to adhere to our mission: to deploy safe, reliable, affordable power,” he said. “We can’t do that by doing things the way we’ve always done. We have to incorporate SAP. We’re using it to transform the way we work in our environment. We need to leverage AI because we don’t have enough humans to do all the work. We have to scale.”

As SCE deploys SAP Business Suite over the next year, it’s focusing on keeping a clean core and reducing customizations. “When we implemented ECC 15 years ago, about 66 percent of our enhancements were never used. We’re learning from that experience,” Inlander said. He went on to note that SCE will use the SAP deployment time to continue to transform its back-office operations. “We’ll be integrating Joule and other AI solutions because doing things the way we’ve always done them and expecting a different outcome is the definition of insanity.”

Steinhaeuser closed the keynote with a look to the future: “We’ve made great progress across all lines of business to deliver a unique experience for you—with AI becoming your personal assistant, powered by data that defies boundaries and applications that take insight to action. The cross-capabilities you just saw now make the flywheel spin.”

The future is here, and is powered by the synergy of AI, data, and applications. Every business can turn innovation into impact.

Connecting the Dots: How SAP BTP Powers AI and the Business Suite

The first touchpoint with SAP for many people is its applications, such as SAP Cloud ERP, SAP Ariba, SAP Customer Experience, or SAP SuccessFactors.

Deep research AI and role-based assistants, coupled with SAP Business Suite innovations, take efficiency to new heights

Each SAP software solution delivers strong value, helping teams excel in their specific domain. Yet the true strength of SAP emerges when these applications operate across the enterprise; when finance decisions are informed by procurement data in real time or when workforce insights from HR directly shape supply chain planning.

That is why SAP Business Suite exists: a portfolio of applications, data, and AI working together to cover the full spectrum of business operations. At the heart of SAP Business Suite is SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP), the technology platform that connects it all.

Infographic: SAP BTP

SAP BTP is a platform engineered to integrate, automate, extend, and build AI-powered business applications and processes across your enterprise.

SAP BTP is also how we supercharge AI. On its own, AI can generate outputs that look impressive, but without business context, they often lack real-world relevance. SAP BTP solves this by bringing together systems, ensuring consistent data, and automating processes across the enterprise. This means AI doesn’t operate in isolation; it understands the relationships between finance, supply chain, HR, procurement, and more.

That connection is what turns AI from theory into practice. When AI is trained on accurate, well-structured data and tied directly to business processes, it can deliver recommendations that people trust and use to make smarter decisions. The result is an innovation flywheel, where teams and AI continually become smarter, faster, and more impactful across the enterprise.

Three-column infographic: Applications, Data, AI

New SAP applications built on SAP BTP

This week at SAP Connect, we talked about the ways in which SAP BTP enables our customers and partners to tap into the innovation flywheel. We also demonstrated how SAP is using SAP BTP as its core application development platform with the release of three new high scale enterprise applications powered by SAP BTP (SAP Build).

  • SAP rolled out the next generation of SAP Ariba solutions for source-to-pay. New capabilities will help procurement professionals improve cost savings, ensure compliance, and build supply chain resilience by automating and supporting key processes such as buying, sourcing, supplier management, contracts, and invoicing. SAP Ariba solutions are now built on SAP BTP, making it easier to integrate them with SAP Business Suite, the SAP ERP application, and third-party ERP systems using open APIs.
  • SAP introduced SAP Supply Chain Orchestration. Built on SAP BTP, SAP Supply Chain Orchestration can leverage data from SAP Business Network and the SAP Business Data Cloud solution, expanding insights across every tier of the supply chain. SAP Supply Chain Orchestration is designed to empower customers with one synchronized supply chain system that will help enhance risk detection, deliver actionable insights, and enable coordinated responses across supply chains. An intelligent impact analysis capability will help manage upstream supply chain risks and disruptions, and both external and internal supply chain signals will be contextualized into prioritized actions. The solution will also provide multi-tier supply chain insights that extend beyond traditional boundaries.
  • SAP Business Network now runs on SAP BTP, giving customers a technical foundation that enables faster speeds, easier integration, collaboration at scale, and continuous innovation. This will enhance customers’ existing investment in SAP Business Network, adding value without disruption.

Lowering barriers with simplified licensing and packaging

SAP is committed to making it easier than ever for customers to adopt, experiment, and scale new innovation. We’re continuously simplifying access to SAP BTP and SAP Business Suite, ensuring that every organization, no matter its size or technical maturity, can take advantage of the latest advances in AI, automation, and data connectivity.

Earlier this year, we simplified SAP Build pricing model and included its capabilities in all SAP Business Suite packages, giving customers a frictionless way to jumpstart their development without needing to purchase additional licenses. Then we introduced a free SAP Build license for partners, allowing solutions to be tested, demoed, developed, and then sold on the SAP Store. Most recently, we unified the SAP Build licensing model, which now includes Joule for Developers and Joule Studio, and made it available to all existing SAP BTP Enterprise Agreement customers.

From streamlined commercial offerings and consumption models to guided innovation paths through RISE with SAP and GROW with SAP, our goal is clear: lower the barrier to innovation so every customer can turn great ideas into business outcomes faster.

Real-world results: Customers delivering value with SAP BTP

To get inspired, here are just a few examples of SAP BTP in action with customers:

SAP Launches Innovative Updates for Supply Chain Management

Disruption has been the defining backdrop of global supply chains. Over the past decade, organizations have demonstrated remarkable resilience — navigating a global pandemic, shifting trade policies, and geopolitical conflicts.

Deep research AI and role-based assistants, coupled with SAP Business Suite innovations, take efficiency to new heights

At the same time, there is a huge opportunity to entirely re-think supply chains with AI and agentic workflows as the powerful transformation agents of the next decade. The lesson is clear: companies that invest in AI-driven applications and reliable data and re-think processes maintain continuity and customer trust, while others risk prolonged shocks, lower service levels, increased cost, and lost revenue.

Today at Supply Chain Connect at SAP Connect, we are building on the phenomenal momentum of AI-driven supply chain transformations with innovations designed to help supply chain leaders not just endure disruption, but transform it into an opportunity for resilience and growth.

Introducing SAP Supply Chain Orchestration

In today’s dynamic market, foresight and a reduced time-to-recover are everything. Business leaders must know where their products are, which suppliers or sub-suppliers are at risk, and how to respond with confidence. Yet, visibility gaps often leave organizations blindsided.

SAP Supply Chain Orchestration is a new AI-centric solution built to detect potential disruptions early, contextualize risk to a company’s unique supply chain configuration, apply intelligent impact analysis, and trigger AI-driven actions across planning, logistics, procurement, and manufacturing. Soon, supply chain stakeholders will be supported by powerful Joule assistants that leverage AI agents to strengthen supplier compliance, increase customer service, and reduce revenue exposure.

What sets SAP Supply Chain Orchestration apart is its foundation on SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP). The solution integrates data from SAP Business Network and SAP Business Data Cloud, providing a comprehensive view across every tier of the supply chain. These multi-tier insights help turn external and internal risk signals into prioritized actions, boosting operational efficiency, compliance, and customer satisfaction.

Set to be available in the first half of 2026, SAP Supply Chain Orchestration is the next step toward a future where businesses can anticipate global shifts before they escalate with a severe business impact.

Advanced AI capabilities and unified scenario simulations optimize supply chain planning

SAP is enabling its customers to reimagine supply chain planning to become faster, smarter, and more connected with SAP Integrated Business Planning (SAP IBP). This evolution of the product combines intelligent automation, a harmonized data model, and AI-driven capabilities to enhance forecasting, streamline processes, and help planners focus on critical decision making.

A harmonized planning area now supports both time-series and order-based planning, allowing users to move seamlessly among strategic, tactical, and operational levels, which ultimately enables seamless telescopic planning. New harmonized scenario simulations reveal the impact of alerts and risks to orders across all planning horizons. Embedded AI strengthens forecasting and inventory management, while characteristic-based planning adds right-fidelity supply planning to optimize stock and capacity matching for critical industries such as fashion retail, high-tech, life sciences, or consumer products.

The new Configurable Planner Workspace provides a unified interface where planners can monitor performance, simulate scenarios, and act immediately — guided by Joule, SAP’s copilot, which delivers contextual assistance and actionable insights from forecasts, supply plans, and multi-echelon inventory.

AI capabilities are currently in beta mode and planned for general availability in Q2 2026, while all other enhancements are now generally available.

New Joule Agents accelerate decisions and automation across the supply chain

SAP introduces three new Joule Agents for supply chain management, designed to automate critical, time-consuming tasks and empower teams to focus on strategic decision-making. These agents embed AI-native automation directly into SAP Cloud ERP, SAP Cloud ERP Private, and SAP Business Network workflows, reducing manual effort and minimizing errors.

  • Production Planning and Operations Agent: Automates prerequisite checks for releasing production orders, validates material, capacity, and scheduling, and can recommend workarounds or release orders instantly – shortening order-to-delivery cycles and reducing costs. General availability is planned for Q1 2026.
  • Change Record Management Agent: Supports product managers and engineers by reasoning over problem reports and change requests, recommending next steps, and initiating changes, which improves governance, traceability, and decision speed. General availability is planned for Q2 2026.
  • Supplier Onboarding Agent: Streamlines onboarding in SAP Business Network by reasoning over supplier details, orchestrating invitations, validating data, and handling escalations, which enables procurement teams to scale faster while focusing on strategic supplier development.

With these agents, SAP is embedding intelligence deeper into day-to-day supply chain workflows, accelerating decisions where they matter most.

Upgrading SAP Business Network to meet customer needs

Global commerce is more interconnected than ever, but too many organizations still operate with fragmented procurement and logistics processes. SAP is introducing upgrades to SAP Business Network, the world’s largest B2B platform, facilitating over US$6.3 trillion in annual commerce across 190 countries.

  • Availability on SAP BTP: SAP Business Network now runs on SAP BTP, providing a modern data foundation and enabling organizations to coordinate deals at scale. It connects easily across SAP and third-party systems, introduces a unified global directory with guided onboarding, and offers workflow customization through SAP Build. Joule integration will be available in January 2026, bringing embedded AI to analytics, automation, and approvals across the network.
  • Network-centric integration across the business suite: Rolling out later this year, SAP Business Network will support end-to-end value streams with SAP Cloud ERP, SAP Ariba, SAP Fieldglass, and SAP Transportation Management. This will accelerate dispute resolution, improve emissions tracking, and enable AI-assisted navigation.
  • Simplified supplier data access: By Q4 2025, users will be able to search for suppliers directly from their ERP interface, eliminating manual onboarding. Buyers will gain faster access to new vendors, reducing activation costs and expanding visibility.

Together, these innovations enhance SAP Business Network with intelligence, reach, and usability — delivering embedded AI, seamless business suite integration, and ERP-native supplier discovery.

SAP launches new logistics management solution

SAP is announcing SAP Logistics Management, a new cloud-native solution designed to complement operations of large distribution centers with capabilities to support smaller, local, and regional warehouses. This will help establish multi-tier distribution networks that strengthen resilience and increase delivery speed.

Fully connected to SAP Cloud ERP Private and SAP Business Network for Logistics, the solution centralizes inventory, shipments, and partner coordination. Unlike standalone tools, it extends ERP capabilities directly to satellite warehouses, drastically reducing manual tasks and ensuring consistency across networks.

Built-in AI capabilities guide operational decisions, eliminating silos and strengthening collaboration across logistics ecosystems. SAP Logistics Management will be available in Q1 2026.

Doehler, a global producer of technology-driven natural ingredients for the food, beverage, and nutrition industry, will leverage the solution in its warehouses to manage its production sites, samples and spare parts.

“SAP Logistics Management is set to deliver lean process automation and accelerated transformation for most of our more than 50 production sites, sampling operations and technical warehouses,” said Dr. Michael Merget, Chief Operating Officer of Doehler Group. “We see its powerful, integrated AI capabilities not as an add-on, but as the core intelligence that will define the future of our logistics.”

Looking ahead

Resilient, intelligent, and collaborative supply chains are no longer aspirations — they are necessities. Together, these innovations reflect SAP’s vision for a fully orchestrated supply chain. The next generation of supply chain technology will empower businesses to detect disruptions early, harness data at scale, and consistently exceed customer expectations. By leading with intelligence and foresight, companies can transform crises into opportunities and position themselves to thrive in a world defined by uncertainty.

The custom-built solution will enhance Henkel’s dispute management process by automating the indexing and classification of claim-related documents, setting a new industry standard for customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.

The custom solution, referred to as financial and supply chain management deduction and dispute management indexing (FSCM DDM Indexing), leverages SAP AI Services to automatically process and extract relevant information from customer claim documents. By embedding SAP AI Services into the early stages of the dispute resolution lifecycle, the solution minimizes manual interventions and ensures faster and more accurate case creation. This transforms what is often a manual and time-consuming process into a swift, intuitive and customer-centric experience.

“SAP’s AI-enabled solution will help us streamline our dispute management process, reducing manual labor and the time required for dispute resolution,” said Dimitri Lerner, Henkel’s corporate director of value chain platform. “As we continue our digital transformation, the partnership with SAP will not just enable our employees to become more productive but also elevate customer experiences.”

Based in Düsseldorf, Germany, Henkel is known for iconic brands such as Persil, Schwarzkopf, Dial and Purex. It operates in 79 countries. As such, its teams must often review high volumes of diverse and complex claim documentation, with claims policies differing in countries and rules. Where the process previously required considerable manual effort, the new AI-assisted claims solution automates the retrieval of documents from a central in-box and enhances the analysis of documents to determine reason codes and location codes. This speeds up and improves the accuracy of the returns and exchanges process. Once logged, these claims are integrated into Henkel’s business performance data, ensuring the company has real-time insights into its business operations, facilitating end-to-end process management.

“We are proud to support Henkel in its digital journey by delivering innovations tailored to its business processes while addressing operational challenges,” said Sindhu Gangadharan, head of SAP’s Customer Innovation Services organization. “This solution harnesses the power of AI to simplify dispute processing and improve end-user productivity. It is an excellent example of how SAP’s innovation capabilities can deliver tangible business outcomes at scale. We look forward to deepening our collaboration with Henkel.”

WestWood’s Digital Transformation for Excellence in Compliance and Customer Service

WestWood Kunsttofftechnik GmbH is a rapidly growing, family-owned company specializing in liquid waterproofing systems for the construction industry. Its solutions protect everything from roofs and car parks to oil rigs, railway platforms, and bridges across 16 countries in Europe and North America.

SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition: out-of-the-box enterprise management

With six locations and a rapidly expanding international presence, WestWood faced growing complexity in managing siloed data and keeping up with ever-evolving compliance requirements. The company’s small product safety team was stretched thin, struggling to maintain manual processes and ensure the highest standards across teams and departments. To better serve customers and streamline its operations, WestWood set out to find an integrated, automated solution.

To address these challenges, the German construction company adopted a comprehensive suite of cloud solutions, services, and learning resources to accelerate its digital transformation.

Working together with SAP gold partner Innovabee, WestWood implemented SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition and SAP S/4HANA for product compliance. WestWood unified business processes, standardized information management, and automated workflows across the company. This integrated approach made critical data accessible to all relevant teams, helping WestWood stay ahead of compliance regulations and support sustainable growth.

Automating product safety for innovation and growth

“We wanted a solution that automated important steps of our product safety processes and was flexible, so we can evolve our workflows as compliance standards change and our company expands into new markets and regions with dynamic requirements,” explained Martin Wegner, product safety manager at WestWood.

The flexibility of WestWood’s products has spurred innovation, such as the growing trend of green roofs, which require robust waterproofing. “It’s becoming increasingly popular to grow plants on roofs, creating a ‘green roof’ that is environmentally friendly and improves air quality,” Wegner added. “New construction trends such as this encourage us to continuously innovate.”

Given that many of WestWood’s protective, decorative, and slip-resistant finishes require special handling, product safety and compliance are mission-critical. Previously, these processes were manually and fragmented across departments, making it difficult for the small team to keep up with changing regulations.

Harnessing automation for superior customer service

With SAP S/4HANA for product compliance, WestWood automated the delivery of product safety information. Now, every customer automatically receives up-to-date safety data sheets with their orders, and these updates can be sent instantly to all previous customers, ensuring safe and compliant use of WestWood products. Previously, this was a time-consuming manual process. Thanks to the automated customer service process, now over 24,000 e-mails are sent automatically each year, saving time and ensuring compliance.

“Automating this process is an amazing time-saver,” Wegner noted. “It makes our lives so much easier and helps us ensure the latest safety and usage instructions are reliably available to our customers.” Centralized data management also provides a continuously updated, auditable track record of all product safety activities.

Automation has also improved internal processes. The product safety team now receives automated notifications whenever product safety information is needed and can easily support multiple languages and fulfill local compliance requirements and regulations.

According to Wegner, “As we expand into new markets, the built-in internationalization features of SAP S/4HANA will be crucial to our success and help us deliver outstanding customer service and support sustainable processes in compliance with local regulations.” This enables WestWood to have faster, more practical management of customer orders for around 10 users across 3 departments, supporting the innovative company’s global expansion.

“Thanks to SAP S/4HANA for product compliance, it is impossible to forget things,” Wegner said. “No information gets delayed in communication between departments, and customers instantly receive the latest safety and usage information for our products.”

Streamlining workflows and supporting sustainability

With SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition, and support from Innovabee, WestWood no longer needs to run on-premises IT systems and can focus on adding value for its customers.

Building on the success of its SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition implementation, WestWood plans to further streamline its operations. The ambitious company aims to consolidate two systems for dangerous goods management into a single SAP application. They are also planning to fully automate label printing, which is an important step as new regulations require larger font sizes and more detailed information. Automatic label printing based on existing product data will optimize management, eliminate redundancies, and save significant time and effort.

WestWood is also committed to sustainability. By reducing paper use and leveraging integrated solutions from SAP, the company is expanding its sustainability management and reporting capabilities. Streamlining and automating compliance with documentation and labeling guidelines, as well as managing hazardous chemicals, allows WestWood to protect the environment at every stage — from production plants and warehouses to end customers.

Improved insights and reporting are also helping WestWood future-proof its business and stay competitive in an industry shifting toward greater environmental, social, and governance transparency.
